Root Canal Treatment: Don’t Fear It, Save Your Tooth Instead

What is a root canal?

Inside every tooth is soft tissue called the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. Deep decay, cracks, or trauma can allow bacteria to reach this pulp and cause infection. When this happens, you may feel severe pain, sensitivity to hot or cold, swelling, or you might notice a pimple-like bump on the gums.

A root canal is a procedure that removes this infected tissue, cleans and disinfects the inside of the tooth, and then seals it to prevent future problems. The goal is simple: save your natural tooth and stop the infection.

Why not just remove the tooth?

Tooth extraction may seem like the easier option, but losing a tooth can create new issues. Nearby teeth may shift, chewing can become harder, and the jawbone in that area may gradually shrink. Replacing a missing tooth with a bridge or implant is more complex and often more expensive than saving the tooth with a root canal.

Whenever possible, keeping your natural tooth is the best choice for your long-term oral health, comfort, and appearance.

What happens during the procedure?

At ProDent Care, your comfort is our first priority. We begin by numbing the area so you feel only slight pressure, not pain. A small opening is made in the top of the tooth to access the infected pulp. Using delicate instruments, the dentist cleans the inside of the root canals, shaping and disinfecting them carefully.

Once the canals are clean, they are filled with a special material and sealed. In most cases, the tooth will then need a dental crown to protect it and restore full strength for chewing.

Does a root canal hurt?

Most patients are surprised by how comfortable they feel. Thanks to modern anesthetics and gentle techniques, a root canal usually feels similar to getting a filling. The procedure actually relieves the pain caused by the infection. Afterward, you may feel mild soreness for a day or two, which can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.

How to care for your tooth after treatment

After your root canal, it’s important to:

  • Avoid chewing hard foods on the treated tooth until the final crown is placed

  • Brush and floss normally to keep the area clean

  • Attend all follow-up visits so we can complete and monitor your restoration

With proper care, a tooth that has had a root canal can last many years, often for life.
